Morrison yanked from card in Houston as officials didn't get tests

HOUSTON -- Former heavyweight champion Tommy Morrison was pulled from a scheduled bout Friday night because state boxing officials didn't get the results of lab tests in time.

Dick Cole, boxing administrator for the state's Department of Licensing and Regulation, said a Houston doctor, Jorge Guerrero, examined Morrison on Thursday and cleared him to fight. But Guerrero never filed the paperwork required by the agency, Cole said.

"As soon as we get that in, he'll be licensed," Cole said. "They say he's OK. But we can't afford to just assume like that. I'm sure he is fine. But we need to have certain forms to prove it and we don't have those."

The 38-year-old Morrison is attempting to come back after an 11-year retirement following the discovery that he was HIV positive. Morrison claims he has taken several HIV tests during his comeback bid and all have been negative.

Morrison was slated to fight Dale Ortiz in a four-round bout in a Houston hotel ballroom on Friday night. Morrison was not immediately available for comment. The hotel did not have a guest registered under Morrison's name.

Morrison returned to the ring earlier this year in West Virginia, knocking out John Castle in the second round. West Virginia athletic commissioner Steve Allred approved Morrison's participation in that fight after reviewing medical records and consulting with the Association of Boxing Commissions' medical review committee.

On Thursday, Patrick Shaughnessy, a spokesman for the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, said Morrison had been granted a boxing license in Texas. Cole said the agency gave Morrison a "verbal agreement" to issue him a license, but could not actually grant one until it received the paperwork.

Cole expected to have the lab tests Thursday night, but he said the doctor could not finish them.

"He thought he'd have all of it done, but he just couldn't get it done," Cole said.

Shaughnessy couldn't discuss specifics of Morrison's case on Thursday, but he said all applicants are required to submit blood samples for testing for Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C and HIV. Applicants testing positive for any of those are rejected, Shaughnessy said.

Morrison won the WBO heavyweight belt in 1993 by outpointing George Foreman, but lost the title later that year. He was scheduled to fight Stormy Weathers when he tested HIV positive in February 1996.

World Champion Calzaghe arrested

Wednesday, 2 June 2004 22:49

World super-middleweight champion Joe Calzaghe was arrested following alleged threatening behaviour, according to Welsh police.

The boxer was released on bail without charge after the incident, which allegedly took place last week at his home in Cwmbran, south Wales.

Calzaghe is due to fight American Glen Johnson for his IBF world light-heavyweight title on June 12 and it is unlikely that this incident will affect the proposed bout.

A Police spokesman said: "Police can confirm that officers were called to an incident in the Cwmbran area on the morning of Thursday, May 27."

"A man was subsequently arrested in connection with an allegation of threatening behaviour, and has subsequently been released without charge on police bail."

Oscar De La Hoya vs Floyd Mayweather

Okay, now for the more important things in life. Oscar De La Hoya and Floyd Mayweather have a big fight coming up on May 5th. De La Hoya is considered by most "experts" to be the underdog. I disagree, I think Oscar can and will win this fight. It is true that Mayweather is the faster of the two, but Oscar is no slouch in the speed department either, and he can punch too. Oscar is light years ahead of Mayweather in the quality of his opponents as well. You would be hard pressed to find anyone that has pushed Mayweather, with the exception of Jose Luis Castillo, who some people feel deserved the nod on their first fight. Factor in Diego Corrales and Zab Judah and you have the sum total of great fights he has been involved in (and they weren't that great). I won't even mention Arturo Gotti and Genaro Hernandez, whom he beat, but only after De La Hoya did it first and better, and while both of them were closer to their prime.

De La Hoya has fought; win, lose or draw, in no particular order; Sugar Shane Mosely, Julio Cesar Chavez, Bernard Hopkins, Felix Trinidad, Ricardo Mayorga, Fernando Vargas, Ike Quartey, Pernall Whitaker and Hector Camacho. That experience will be the difference. On top of that, Oscar is used to fighting at a heavier weight, which will work for him in two ways, he will have easier time absorbing Mayweathers punches (add to that, Mayweather is not a big puncher) and Mayweather will be absorbing the punch of a naturally heavier fighter (add to that, Oscar is a big puncher). I'll go on record and predict an Oscar victory. If anyone does get knocked out, it will be Mayweather.

Just for the record: Mayweather has brought up the fact that De La Hoya fought an "old" Pernell Whitaker. Whitaker was thirty two years old when he and De La Hoya fought in 1997. Oscar is thirty four years old, two years older than Whitaker was when when they fought. Mayweather should do his homework before he opens his mouth, because at that time Whitaker was rated pound for pound, the number one fighter in the world, hardly an "old" man. So what's his point?
